4 Tips To Do Before Starting Up Your Furnace For The Season

As the sun begins to set earlier the nights and early mornings start to become chillier. Slowly but surely we are beginning Autumn and your furnace is going to be starting back up again for the season.

One of the biggest recommendations we love to give our clients is to invest in a programmable thermostat because, in the midst of a season like Fall, it becomes very handy when the mornings are beaming hot and the nights chilly and cool. You’re able to program your thermostat to have the AC blowing during the day and the furnace only at night.

Below I will be listing tips and tricks to help prolong the life of your unit before starting it up completely before winter.

  1. Furnace Maintenance

When getting ready for the furnace season, it is important to always check and clean your unit before starting it on to assure that all the system components are working properly.

We at Duct Professor recommend that you hire someone in your area to do your furnace maintenance so that they’re able to check all the system components, burners, flame sensors, and HSI for blower capacitors and flame sensors. Doing this will not only prolong your unit’s life but will prevent early system breakdowns and save you from emergency breakdown fees.

  1. Check/ replace your old filters

Since it is a new year, your filter from last year is probably still in the unit and you should replace it. Changing your filter allows the airflow in your home to flow more efficiently while also collecting dust and debris from the home. If the last time you switched your filter for your AC was at the start of the season, we would recommend switching that one as well to assure that airflow is not being blocked by all the dust and debris on the used filter. Depending on the type of filter you have, you are supposed to replace them around 3-6 months.

  1. Ensure your Chimney/ Intake pipe is clear

Making sure that there is no obstruction in your chimney for your furnace or the intake pipe is very important to check over because it can start a fire if not maintained.

  1. Re-program your thermostat

Re-programming your thermostat from AC to furnace at night not only ensures comfort for your family but also helps start up your furnace to do troubleshooting and assure your system is working properly. For further questions, call us at (847) 744-8099.
